What does custom software actually cost?
The honest answer
There is no honest single number. Custom software costs what the problem, the integrations, and the risk require. Anyone quoting a fixed package before seeing the work is selling a package, not a system.
DigitalA2Z prices after discovery. You receive a written scope, a cost, a timeline, and the trade-offs — what is in version one, what waits, and what would change the number. We do not publish hourly rates. Hourly rates invite shopping and hide the real drivers.
What moves the number
Scope: how many jobs the software must finish in version one. A tool that replaces one spreadsheet is not a tool that replaces a plant.
Integrations: accounting, machines, marketplaces, and payment rails. Each connection is real work, including the days spent waiting on someone else’s API.
Data: clean lists migrate. Messy lists are a project. Pretending otherwise is how go-lives slip.
Users and locations: more roles and sites mean more training and more edge cases.
Care after launch: a system without an owner will rot. Support is optional in the contract and usually wise in practice.
How to think about investment
Compare the cost to the hours you already spend copying, the orders you already lose, or the risk you already carry. If those numbers are vague, discovery should make them less vague before you approve a build.
Be wary of the cheapest bid. The hidden cost is a second project to replace the first.

Questions
Can you give a starting range on a call?
We can say whether a problem sounds like weeks or many months. A number you can take to a board comes after written scope.
Do you work fixed price?
We work from an agreed scope. If the work changes, the scope changes in writing. That is how surprises stay visible.
